Semen Cryopreservation

When is semen cryopreservation required?

Semen cryopreservation is required in the following cases:

  • If the male partner, for one reason or another, is unable to report to ReproART on the day of insemination for IVF;
  • If there is a risk that the male partner will not be able to provide us with a semen specimen;
  • When the number of spermatozoa in the ejaculate is very small and there is a risk that spermatozoa cannot be identified in the ejaculate during the procedure;
  • In case of azoospermia, when the semen is extracted through microsurgery;
  • For oncology patients, to save the reproductive function prior to chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy;
  • In Klinefelter syndrome cases, to freeze the sperm in a younger age in order to preserve reproductive function.

Your frozen semen will be used by the ReproART Fertility Clinic during your In-Vitro Fertilization treatment or for Intrauterine Insemination.

How is semen cryopreservation performed?

To plan semen cryopreservation (sperm freezing), please contact us to set an appointment in advance. Once at ReproART, you will submit a semen sample which will be examined and frozen immediately. A special cryoprotectant is added to semen, all of which is frozen at -196°C. There is no limit on how long frozen semen can be stored and remain useful for reproductive procedures.
