Causes of Infertility

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 12-15% of the couples in the world are infertile, including in Georgia.  However, contemporary reproductive medicine successfully uses different technologies and methods to treat infertility.

CAUSES OF INFERTILITY

Causes of Infertility may range from genetic factors to those acquired throughout one’s lifetime, which may be caused by a variety of diseases. Picking the right strategy for treating infertility relies on properly identifying causes and a correct diagnosis.  This, in turn, is only possible through complex examination.

FEMALE INFERTILITY FACTOR

Women are born with 1-2 million eggs. By the time of a woman’s first menstrual period (maturity), this number drops to 500,000. The beginning of menopause occurs with about remaining.

However, a drastic decrease in the number of eggs may occur much earlier, at the age of 20, for example. This disorder is known as primary ovarian insufficiency. Changes in the quality of eggs vary from case to case, and they are influenced by age. After the age of 35, these changes accelerate, limiting the chances of natural pregnancy.

Infertility diagnostics is especially relevant in couples whose family history shows similar cases. Thus, a timely visit to the doctor and correct diagnostics precondition your successful treatment.

MALE FACTOR INFERTILITY

40-50% of the infertility cases are due to the male factor. ReproART examines sperm to assess male fertility. Normal sperm parameters according to the World Health Organization (WHO):

Semen concentration

≥15 ml

General motility:

≥ 40%

Progressive motility

≥ 32%

Morphology

≥ 4%

If semen parameters do not meet these norms, intrauterine insemination or In-Vitro Fertilization through intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IUI, IVF/ICSI) may be offered to solve the infertility problem.

If the ejaculate does not contain any spermatozoa, our team offers to solve the male infertility problem through sperm aspiration. This is achieved though microsurgery.

When using sperm derived through microsurgery for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), ReproART boasts the same level of success as in In-Vitro Fertilization treatment with males showing normal sperm results.
