INTRACYTOPLASMIC SPERM INJECTION (ICSI)
After having returned to Georgia, ReproART Director Lika Chkonia introduced Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), followed by the birth of the first child conceived using this method.
Oocytes (eggs) may be fertilized using one of two techniques: standard insemination or ICSI. Standard insemination, when sperm and an egg are placed in culture, and fertilization proceeds by the sperm performing its natural functions despite being outside the body. Alternatively, fertilization may be achieved using ICSI, a procedure in which a sperm is injected directly into an oocyte (cytoplasm) with a glass micropipette while viewing with a microscope.
WHEN IS INTRACYTOPLASMIC SPERM INJECTION (ICSI) USED?
The success of ICSI largely depends on the experience and knowledge of the embryologist. The use of Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) in our laboratory gives an 80% fertilization rate, results matching those of the world’s finest laboratories.
